Renewing an Expired Authentication Token/Key

  1. Authentication tokens/keys allow external applications like Excel and Power BI to access your Playbook database using the API.
  2. Authentication tokens/keys are valid for one year. Once they expire an administrator can generate a new authentication token/key. 
  3. To generate a new authentication token/key, select Dashboard.

  4. Open any report.

  5. Click Settings > Get an API/BI URL > Get Authentication Token > Copy Key. Note: only administrators can generate an authentication token.
  6. Warning - Make sure you copy the key! We do not store it, and you will not be able to see it again. And be sure to paste it in the right place before copying over it with a BI URL or Power Query.

  7. To update the authentication token/key in Excel...
    1. On the Query tab click the Query menu then click Edit.

    2. Click Advanced Editor.

    3. Copy/paste the new authentication token overriding all the text between the double quotes beginning with the word bearer.

    4. Click Done then Close & Load.

    5. Voila! Your Excel file's authentication token has been updated and valid for another year.
  8. To update the authentication token/key in Power BI...
    1. Click Transform data.

    3. Copy/paste the new authentication token overriding all the text between the double quotes beginning with the word bearer.

    4. Click Done then Close & Apply.

    5. Voila! Your Power BI file's authentication token has been updated and valid for another year.
